 Launceston ist eine Stadt im Nordosten der zu Australien gehörenden Insel Tasmanien. 1826 begann die Stadt damit, ihre Lampen mit Walöl zu beleuchten. Später plante sie den Bau eines Gaswerks, wozu 1856 der schottische Ingenieur William Falconer von der Hobart Gas Co. engagiert wurde. 1858 wurde schließlich die Launceston Gas Co. gegründet. Das Gas, welches anfangs überwiegend zur Beleuchtung der Straßen und ab 1895 auch zur Versorgung privater Haushalte zum Heizen und Kochen diente, wurde mit Hilfe von Kohle erzeugt.

 Launceston is a city in the north-eastern part of Tasmania, which belongs to Australia. The city started to fuel their lamps with whale oil in 1826. A gasworks was planned in 1856, and the Scottish engineer William Falconer from Hobart Gas Co. was engaged. The Launceston Gas Co. was founded in 1858. The gas was produced by coal. It was used for lightening the streets, and for supplying private households for cooking and heating.
