| Witney, ca. 20 km westlich von Oxford gelegen, hatte eine durchaus beträchtliche Textilindustrie. Allerdings sah man sich stets benachteiligt, da man nicht - wie andere Industriestädte im Norden - an das Eisenbahnnetz angeschlossen war. Nach mehreren im Raum stehenden Optionen, wie z. B. eine Stichstrecke von der London and Birmingham Railway oder der Oxford, Worcester and Wolverhampton Railway, gründeten private Investoren schließlich eine eigene Aktiengesellschaft. Die Witney Railway wurde 1859 genehmigt und startete bereits 1861 mit der Personenbeförderung. Ein Jahr später nahm man dann auch den Transport von Gütern (wie z. B. Kohle oder Wolle) auf. Auch wenn die Strecke nur knapp 13 km lang war, war sie für Witney doch ein Segen. 1890 ging die Bahnlinie dann in der Great Western Railway auf. | ||||
| Witney, located 12 miles west of Oxford, had been an important town with a significant woollen industry, but found itself at a competitive disadvantage as northern manufacturing towns gained railway connection. After several options, including branch lines from the London and Birmingham Railway and the Oxford, Worcester and Wolverhampton Railway, finally private investors formed an own company: Witney Railway was authorised in 1859 and opened for passenger traffic in 1861. One year later, it started carrying goods (such as coal, wool and blankets). Although the track was only about 8 miles long, it was a great blessing for the town of Witney. In 1890, the line was absorbed by the Great Western Railway. | ||||
