Baron Willern D.A.M. van Brienen van de Groote Lindt, of Wassenaar, born in 1814, was responsible for the foundation of this zoo. He had the support of the King and of many leading citizens of Hague. The company was established on November 14th, 1861 by Royal decree. The initial capital was 150.000 Guilders divided into 3.000 shares of 50 Guilders each. The introduction of animals and facilities, most of them coming from the Netherlands colonies, and the propagation of useful species of both, were the goals of the company. The company's land and buildings were called the Zoologisch Botanisch Tuin (Zoological & Botanical Garden). The 18.82 acres of land on the Westbenoordenhoutsche Polder were situated, at that time. on the edge of the city. The German Army took over the zoo area in 1944, and the zoo had to close. The animals that had not died of hunger during four long years of war, were removed to nearby Wassenaar. The Heineken Brewery purchased the grounds of the former zoo after the war and sold sections of it back to the city later.
