Das Zertifikat bestätigt, dass die Trustees Aktie Nummer 256 für die beiden Herren halten. | |||

Die Gesellschaft wurde im Jahr 1724 gegründet. Noch im gleichen Jahr begann man mit den Bauarbeiten. Diese zogen sich jedoch bis 1736 hin. Um die Verbindung noch attraktiver zu machen, wurden mehrere Seitenkanäle gebaut. 1779 ging die Gesellschaft an ein neues Management über, das nach der Jahrhundertwende den Passagierdienst mit einer eigenen Schiffsflotte zwischen Liverpool und Manchester aufnahm. Die fortschreitende Industrialisierung führte dazu, dass das Projekt immer ertragreicher wurde und zum Teil sehr hohe Dividenden für die Aktionäre abwarf. Mit der Eröffnung der Liverpool & Manchester Railway, deren Strecke fast parallel zum Kanal verlief, begann der Niedergang der Wasserstraße. Preiskämpfe schwächten in den Folgejahren die Firma. Diese wurde schließlich von den Aktionären der Bridgewater Company übernommen. 1865 wurde der Passagierverkehr eingestellt. Nachdem 1885 der größere und tiefere Manchester Ship Canal gebaut wurde, wurde der alte Kanal teilweise stillgelegt. Das Unternehmen wurde 160 Jahre nach seiner Gründung aufgelöst. | |||

The company was founded in 1724 to make navigable the rivers Mercy (now Mersey) and Irwell between Liverpool and Manchester. Although the construction works began immediately they took until 1736. Several lateral canals were built. From 1759 the company faced competition from the Duke of Bridgewater’s Canal on a similar route. In 1779 the company was acquired by new management who competed successfully with the Bridgewater Canal for freight traffic, and started a passenger service with its own fleet from 1807, introducing steamboats in the 1830s. Progressive industrialisation generated more and more profits and yielded the shareholders very high dividends. With the opening of the Liverpool & Manchester Railway in 1830, its line running nearly parallel to the Navigation, the decline of the waterway began. Price wars weakened the company, and it was eventually taken over in 1844 by the owners of the Bridgewater Canal. The passenger service was closed in 1865. When the much bigger and deeper Manchester Ship Canal was finished in 1885, the old canal was partially put of service. 160 years after its foundation the company was dissolved. | |||
