Die Minen-Explorationsgesellschaft wurde 1909 von William Speirs Bruce gegründet. Ziel war es, das Svalbard Archipel auf die Gewinnung von Bodenschätzen wie Kohle, Gips, Eisenerz, Marmor und möglicherweise auch Erdöl zu untersuchen. Zwischen 1909 und 1922 gab es insgesamt sieben Expeditionen. Es kam jedoch zu keinem kommerziellen Abbau. Bis 1920 hatte das Syndikat Ansprüche auf Schürfrechte für 7.709 Quadratkilometer angemeldet, so viel wie kein anderes Unternehmen. Nachdem 1920 in Paris die Spitzbergen-Verträge unterzeichnet wurden, kam Spitzbergen 1925 zu Norwegen. | |||

William Speirs Bruce founded the mineral exploration company in 1909. The company wanted to locate and assay the potential of the Svalbard archipelago for the exploitation of minerals such as coal, gypsum, iron ore, marble and possibly petroleum. There were seven expeditions between 1909 and 1922, but no commercial mining operations were conducted by the Syndicate. By the year 1920, the Syndicate has filed claims to mining rights for 7,709 square kilometres, much more than any other company. After the Spitsbergen Treaty, which was signed in Paris in 1920, Norway became the sovereign power of Spitsbergen in 1925. | |||
