Der 1843 gegründete Zoo von Antwerpen ist einer der ältesten in Europa. Nur in London, Paris und Amsterdam gab es bereits zuvor einen Tierpark. Die Gründung des Zoos geht auf den Naturwissenschaftler Jacques Kets (1785-1865) zurück. Er hatte bereits mehrere Tiere in seinem Haus in der Kloosterstraat. Zudem besaß Kets außerhalb der Stadt ein Grundstück, auf dem der Zoo später errichtet wurde. J. Francois Loos, der spätere Bürgermeister von Antwerpen, rief zusammen mit Kets im Jahr 1843 ein Komitee ins Leben, das eine permanente Ausstellung von exotischen Tieren und Pflanzen gründen sollte. Am 21. Juli des gleichen Jahres wurde die Société de Zoologie d'Anvers zunächst als private Vereinigung gegründet. 1844 erhielt sie das königliche Dekret und durfte sich fortan als Königliche Gesellschaft bezeichnen. Unter der Leitung von Kets und seinem Neffen entwickelte sich der Zoo zum wichtigsten Zoologischen Garten Europas. | |||

The Zoological Garden of Antwerp was founded in 1843. It was one of the first zoos in Europe. Only London, Paris and Amsterdam had already a zoo. The zoo was founded on the initiative of the natural scientist Jacque Kets (1785-1865). He already had several animals in his house in the Kloosterstraat. Furthermore he owned land outside the side. On this land the zoo was build later. In 1843 Kets and the later major of Antwerp, J. Francois Loos, founded a committee to organize a permanent exhibition of exotic animals and parks. The Committee founded the Société de Zoologie d'Anvers on July 21st, 1843. In 1844 Belgium's first monarch King Leopold I. sanctioned the title Société Royale de Zoologie d'Anvers. The zoo developed rapidly in the following years and became the most important zoo in Europe. | |||
