| Dorothea Beale, Direktorin des Ladies' College in Cheltenham, hatte 1886 den Plan gefasst, ihren Lehrerinnen und Studentinnen Zugang zu höherer Bildung zu verschaffen. Nachdem sie zunächst etwas Land an der Banbury Road in Oxford gekauft hatte, verwarf sie den Bau einer eigenen Einrichtung und kaufte das bereits bestehende Cowley House. Darin eröffnete sie im Herbst des Jahres 1893 ihr St. Hilda’s College. Namensgeberin soll dabei Hilda von Whitby gewesen sein – Gründerin des Klosters Whitby, welches zu deren Zeit im Bildungswesen führend war. Die Einrichtung in Oxford wurde 1897 zu einem eingetragenen Unternehmen, 1901 wurde sie mit einem weiteren Beale-Projekt in Cheltenham zu St. Hilda's Incorporated College verschmolzen. Heute ist das St. Hilda’s College eines der konstituierenden Colleges der Universität Oxford. Immer noch am Cowley Place gelegen, ist es das östlichste aller Colleges. Im Jahr 2006 verlor St. Hilda’s seinen exklusiven Status: Seitdem dürfen sich auch männliche Studenten einschreiben. | ||||
| In 1886 Miss Dorothea Beale, Principal of the Ladies' College, Cheltenham, had the idea to make it possible for her younger teachers and older students to avail themselves of the new opportunities of higher education for women at Oxford. After buying some acres of land on Oxfords’ Banbury Road she didn’t build an own Oxford hall, but bought the Cowley House. There she founded St. Hilda’s College in 1893. It is said she has chosen Hilda of Whitby while she was head of Whitby Abbey, a double monastery of women and men and the most important house of education of her time. The Oxford hall became an incorporated company in 1897, in 1901 it was merged with Beale’s St. Hilda's Cheltenham to St Hilda's Incorporated College. Today St Hilda's College is one of the constituent colleges of the University of Oxford. Still located at Cowley Place it is the most easterly of all the university's colleges. In 2006 St. Hilda’s lost its female status – now men and women can be admitted as fellows and students. | ||||
