The Maindy Shipping Co Ltd, Cardiff, was formed 1915 with Jenkins, Richards & Evans Ltd as managers. By 1917 they owned 4 steamers, losing one by enemy action, but ordering new ships. From 1916 to 1920 the company acquired several “used” ships like „Maindy Abbey“ (former „Annie“ of West Hartlepool Steam Navigation Co., Ltd.), „Maindy Bridge“ (former „Begonia“ of Stag Line Ltd.) or the steamship „S/S WOODBURN“ of Tree SS Co Ltd.. So the names given to the steamers was Maindy.... These years saw profits rise from GBP 19.903 in 1916 to GBP 189.235 in 1920. In 1920 a subsidiary called Maindy Transport Ltd was formed to develop the general cargo carrying trade between UK ports and Scandinavia, Netherlands, France, Spain, and Morocco. By 1921 the fleet comprised the Maindy Shipping Co Ltd (10) and the Maindy Transport Co Ltd (2 coasters). The increase in numbers was due to the purchase of all 6 ships of the Tree S.S. Co Ltd of Howard-Jones Ltd. In 1921 the two companies were in financial difficulty and a rescue package was agreed first with Jenkins, Richards & Evans and then with D.R. Llewellyn, a director of Llewellyn, Merrett & Price Ltd. Merrett Bros Ltd were appointed as managers. In 1925 they were once more in financial straits and J. Rattray was appointed manager for the 4 ships which remained out of 20 which had existed two years before. By 1930 only three ships were left. In 1935 Powell, Duffryn & Co took over the company which had no ships on its books.
