 Der Kanal wurde zwischen 1817 und 1823 gebaut um eine Verbindung zwischen dem Lake Erie und dem Hudson River herzustellen. Damit war eine direkte Verbindung von den Großen Seen bis nach New York gegeben. Der Kanal war rund 350 Meilen lang und sehr profitabel.

 The canal was built between 1817 and 1823, to connect the Lake Erie and the Hudson River. It created a connection between the Great Lakes to New York. The canal was round about 350 miles long and very profitable.
