 Bis Ende 1910 gelangte keine Fernbahn vom Westen oder Süden direkt nach New York City. Alle Eisenbahnlinien endeten in Jersey City, wo alle wichtigen Eisenbahngesellschaften große Fernbahnhöfe errichteten. Diese waren über Fähren mit der Insel Manhattan verbunden. Der erste Versuch, den Hudson zu untertunneln wurde 1874 gestartet. Auf Grund einer Ausbruchsexplosion am 21.07.1880 scheiterte das Projekt. Versuch Nummer zwei wurde 1888 gestartet. Er scheiterte diesmal an finanziellen Schwierigkeiten. 1901 wurde ein dritter Versuch gestartet. Mit Erfolg: Am 25.08.1908 fand die Betriebseröffnung der ersten Strecke der Hudson & Manhattan Railroad Company statt.

 Until the end of 1910, there was no such thing as an intercity-railway from West or South directly to New York City. All railway lines ended in Jersey City where all important railway companies established large intercity-railway stations. These were connected with the island of Manhattan by means of ferries. The first attempt to build a tunnel under the Hudson was started in 1874. The project fell through based on an outbreak explosion on 21 July 1880. Attempt number two was initiated in 1888. This time the attempt failed due to financial difficulties. A third attempt was started in 1901. With success: The first stretch of the Hudson & Manhattan Railroad Company was opened for operation on August 25, 1908. With original signature of Thomas J. Watson, founder of IBM!
