 John C. Fremont (1813-1890) hat sich durch die Erkundung weiter Strecken des amerikanischen Westens einen Namen gemacht. Fremont wurde dabei zu einer nationalen Kultfigur, so dass die neu gegründete Republikanische Partei ihn 1856 als ihren ersten Präsidentschaftskandidaten vorschlug. Fremont gewann zwar den Vorwahlkampf gegen Ex-Präsident Millard Fillmore, verlor jedoch letztendlich die Wahl gegen James Buchanan.

 Original signature of John Charles Fremont. John C. Fremont (1813-1890) has built up a reputation through the reconnaissance of wide stretches of the American West. Fremont became thereby a national cult figure so that the newly founded Republican party proposed him in 1856 as their first presidential candidate. Fremont may have won the pre-election battle against former president Millard Fillmore, at long last he lost the elections from James Buchanan.
