Ludwig I of Bavaria encouraged the foundation of a German History Museum already in 1830. Baron Hans von und zu Aufseß took the thoughts up again in 1846. He finally founded the museum as general repertory in 1852, after the assembly of the Historians and Anti- quarians in Dresden decided to build the Germanisches Museum. The Literarisch-artistische Anstalt of the Germanisches Museum was established in 1853. It was a predecessor of the in-house publishing company. The first exhibits were stored in the Tiergärtnerturm in Nuremberg. The Kingdom of Bavaria and the City of Nuremberg conveyed the former Carthusian Monastery as location for the new museum on 20 April 1857. The Bavarian King donated 5,000 Guilders to cover one third of the costs to pay to the Kingdom, the remai- ning costs were waived in 1861. The communal shares in the Carthusian Monastery were transferred without any payment. There were two major expansions during the decades. In the first quarter of the 20th century, special museum buildings, Alter Eingang, Lapidarium and a gallery were constructed. Additional building followed after the World War II, when old structure was overbuilt. Theodor Heuss, first President of Germany, was chairman of the administrative board of the Germanisches Nationalmuseum between 1948 and 1963. He supported the reconstruction of the museum after the World War II. Associated to the actual museum are an archive, the Deutsche Kunstarchiv, a library, a restoration department (Institut für Kunsttechnik und Konservierung), and a pedagogical centre. The Germi- sche Nationalmuseum is the largest culture-historical museum in the German-speaking sphere. It covers round about 1.3 million ob- jects, starting in the early days, and ranging up to the immediate present. Round about 25,000 objects are exhibited. As foundation un- der public law the Germanisches Nationalmuseum is financed proportional by the Federal Republic of Germany, the Free State of Bava- ria, and by the City of Nuremberg. As research institute it is member of the Leibniz-Society. Minimum bid: 5,000 € Farbholzschnitt von J. J. Weber im Buch„Das Germanische Museum 1852 - 1902“, das ebenfalls mit versteigert wird.
