The 17th and 18th century were dominated in Europe by the pursuit to the treasures of Asia. In many countries daring businessmen and speculators initiated trading companies to import the precious commodities like spices, pearls, or silk from Far East. One of the first German colonial companies was the Compagnie Royale de Bengale. The company was initiated by the Englishman named Harris, who raised more than half the capital in Flanders. The first sailing was in 1754. Five years later, a second sailing was undertaken. It was the last sailing by the company. Ten years later, the company was in liquidation, the investors have lost 75 per cent of their investment. |
