Die Bank entstand am 2. Oktober 1889 durch die Fusion der Banco Centro-Americano mit der Banco Nacional Hondureño. Beide Vorläuferbanken hatten bereits das Recht, Banknoten auszugeben. 1969 übernahm die First National Citibank of New York 50 Prozent der Aktien der Banco de Honduras.
The bank was created by the merger of the Banco Centro-Americano and the Banco Nacional Hondureño on 2 October 1889. Both banks already had the right to issue banknotes. 50 per cent of the share capital was acquired by the First National Citibank of New York in 1965.
