During the 15th and 16th centuries, Portugal became the leading colonial power in Europe. In 1759, Pombal, King Joseph’s secretary of finances, initiated the foundation of an overseas trading company. The Companhia geral de Pernambuco e Paraiba received the exclusive privilege to conduct trade with the Brazilian provinces Pernambuco and Paraiba. The company was already liquidated after Pombal’s downfall. However, its ships were still permitted to conduct trade with Asia until 1797. The liquidation even wore on until 1821.
