Butterworth-Judson Corporation

Egbert P. Judson (1812-1893) war ein Erfinder
und Hersteller von Sprengstoffen. Um 1886
gründete er die Butterworth-Judson Chemical
Works in Newark. Das Werk stellte Schwefel-
säure her, welche ein wichtiger Grundstoff für
die spätestens nach Einsetzen des 1. Weltkriegs
nachhaltig benötigten Sprengstoffe war. Des-
halb wurde 1917 zudem eine Produktion für
synthetisches Phenol und Pikrinsäure einge-
richtet. Aufgrund diverser Unfälle (Explosio-
nen und Feuer) schwand der Erfolg des Unter-
nehmens, bis es 1922 dann pleite war.

Moore Lupton (1854-1910) gegründet. Hatte
er zunächst noch für S.W. Green gearbeitet,
gründete er 1882 dann entsprechend seine
eigene Firma. Neben der Tom Brown Series
scheinen die von ihm veröffentlichten Bücher
jedoch überwiegend „praktischen“ Bezug zu
haben: „The Popular Cyclopedia of Useful
Knowledge“, „Farm and Household Cyclopa-
edia“, „The American family cook book“ oder
„One Hundred and Fifty-Six Popular Old-Time
Songs“. 1902 wurde der Firmenname in Feder-
al Book Company geändert.
