Fritz Hoffmann-La Roche gründete 1896 in
Basel F. Hoffmann-La Roche. Erstes Produkt
war das Schilddrüsen-Präparat Aiodin. 1919
wurde die Gesellschaft in eine Aktiengesell-
schaft umgewandelt. In den 1930er-Jahren
startete Roche die synthetische Herstellung
von Vitamin C und wurde bald Marktführer
auf diesem Gebiet. 1952 erfolgte mit Rimi-
fon, einem Mittel gegen Tuberkulose, der
Einstieg in die Chemotherapeutika-Sparte.
Ab 1980 arbeitete Roche mit dem US-Bio-
tech-Unternehmen Genentech zusammen.
Das erste neu entwickelte Aids-Medikament
wurde 1995 in den USA zugelassen. Nach
der Übernahme der Boehringer Mannheim
GmbH im Jahr 1997 wurde deren Phar-
masparte in diejenige von Roche integriert.
Die Diagnostik-Sparten beider Gesellschaf-
ten wurden zur Roche Diagnostics GmbH
zusammengelegt. Nachdem Roche bereits
1990 erste Anteile an Genentech erworben
hatte, übernahm die Gesellschaft das US-Bi-
otech-Unternehmen im März 2009 komplett.

into the pharmaceutical branch of Roche. The diagnostic business of both companies was merged in the Roche Diagnostics GmbH. After Roche started
