 Die Wurzeln der Gesellschaft liegen in einer 1828 von Edward Vickers mitgegründeten Gussstahl Fabrik Nagler Vickers and Company. 1867 erfolgte die Umwandlung der Firma in eine Kapitalgesellschaft namens Vickers, Songs & Company, Ltd. Nach der Übernahme von Barrow Shipbuilding Company, Naval Constructions Yard und Maxim Nordfeld Guns and Ammunitions Company (Waffenhersteller) erfolgte die Umfirmierung in Vickers, Sons & Maxim Limited. Ab diesem Zeitpunkt war Vickers in der Lage, eine komplette Produktpalette vom Schiffbau bis hin zu Panzerungen und Schiffsgeschützen anzubieten. 1927 fusionierte die Gesellschaft mit der Sir W. G. Armstrong-Whitworth & Co. Ltd zu Vickers-Armstrongs, Ltd. Diese Gesellschaft wurde in den 1960ern verstaatlicht.

 Edward Vickers co-founded the cast steel plant Naylor Vickers and Company in 1828. The company was changed into a joint-stock-company under the name Vickers, Son & Company, Ltd. in 1867. There was a further name changed to Vickers, Sons & Maxim Limited after the company took over the Barrow Shipbuilding Company, the Naval Constructions Yard and Maxim Nordfeld Guns and Ammunitions Company. At the point, Vickers was able to offer the complete product portfolio from ship building right up to armouring and naval guns. The company merged with the Sir W. G. Armstrong-Whitworth & Co. Ltd to form Vickers-Armstrongs, Ltd. in 1927, which was nationalized in the 1960th.
