 1899 entstand unter Führung von Giovanni Agnelli senior die Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino (FIAT). Vom ersten Modell, dem Fiat 3,5 HP wurden 1899 und 1900 rund 20 Exemplare hergestellt. Während Anfangs vor allem Autos und andere Fahrzeuge produziert wurden, wandelte sich Fiat in den 1960er-Jahren zum Mischkonzern. Nun wurden auch industrielle Investitionsgüter wie Züge, Flugzeuge und Flugzeugmotoren, Landmaschinen, Schiffsmotoren und Kraftwerke gebaut. Zudem stieg Fiat in die Versicherungs- und Bankenbranche ein. Mitte der 1970er-Jahre war Fiat nach Volkswagen der größte Automobilhersteller in Europa. Eine falsche Produktpalette führte dazu, dass Fiat in den 1980er-Jahren in Turbulenzen geriet. Die Schuld hierfür wurde vor allem Giovanni Agnelli zur Last gelegt. 2011 wurde der Konzern aufgespalten. Große Teile kamen zu Fiat Industrial S.p.A., während das Automobilgeschäft in der neuen Fiat S.p.A. gebündelt wurde. Ende 2014 fusionierte Fiat S.p.A. mit der Chrysler Group zu Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N. V. Fiat Industrial fusionierte später mit CNH Global zu CNH Industrial, deren Großaktionär Exor N.V., die Investmentgesellschaft der Familie Agnelli, ist.

 In 1899 the Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino (FIAT) was founded under the leadership of Giovanni Agnelli. Between 1899 and 1900, round about 20 cars were produced of the first model, the Fiat 3,5 HP. While the company produced especially cars and other vehicles in the first years, Fiat changed to an industrial conglomerate in the 1960s. The company produced industrial capital goods like trains, planes, air craft engines, agricultural machinery, ship engines, and power plants. Fiat also entered the banking and insurance business. Fiat became the second largest automobile manufacturer in Europe after Volkswagen by mid 1970s. A wrong product portfolio caused turmoil in the 1980s. Especially Giovanni Agnelli was blamed for the crises. The Fiat Group was divided in 2011. Large parts became part of Fiat Industrial S.p.A., while the automobile business was organised in the new Fiat S.p.A.. This company merged with Chrysler Group to Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V. by end of 2014. Fiat Industrial merged with CNH Global to form CNH Industrial, where Exor N.V., the investment company of the Agnelli family, is the major shareholder.
