 Durant zählt zusammen mit Farnam, den Gebrüdern Ames sowie Grenville Dodge zu den Erbauern der Union Pacific, die den östlichen Teil der Transkontinentalen Eisenbahn verlegte. Thomas C. Durant organisierte die Credit Mobilier und war dadurch bei der Geldbeschaffung auch die treibende Kraft innerhalb der Union Pacific.

 Together with Farnam, the Ames brothers, and Grenville Dodge, Durant was one of the constructors of the Union Pacific, which built the eastern part of the transcontinental railway. Thomas C. Durant organised the Credit Mobilier and was the leading power of the Union Pacific in terms of fundraising.
