 Die Firma wurde 1983 gegründet und war schon bald der zweitgrößte Anbieter für Ferngespräche in den USA (nach AT&T). 2002 führte der bis dahin weltweit größte Börsenskandal - es ging um Fehlbuchungen von 11 Mrd. US-Dollar - das Unternehmen in den Bankrott.

 Founded in 1983, the company quickly became the second largest long distance Telephone Company in the US (after AT&T). In 2002 the company collapsed during the WorldCom scandal, which until then was the largest accounting fraud in American history.
