Alexander Graham Bell demonstrated his telephone at the Philadelphia Exposition in 1876. As switchboard connection by manual operators was not very practicable it didn't take much time until several people made efforts to develop an automatic connecting apparatus. Around the beginning of the 20th century several were established then. Automatic Telephones (Australasia) Limited introduced the automatic telephone to Australia and New Zealand.
