 Das Lyceum war ursprünglich ein Gentlemen's Club im britischen Liverpool. Die Gründer, Mitglieder der Liverpool Literary and Philosophical Society, wollten damit einen Rahmen für gemeinsame Treffen schaffen, der eine Alternative zu den oft lauten Kaffeehäusern sein sollte. Aus diesem Grund wurde von 1800 bis 1802 an einem neoklassizistischen Gebäude gebaut, welches auf den Entwurf des Architekten Thomas Harrison zurückging. Darüber hinaus war das Lyceum aber auch Heimat der Liverpool Subscription Library. Bereits im Jahr 1757 gegründet, war diese höchstwahrscheinlich die erste Leihbücherei Europas.

 Initially the Lyceum was a gentlemen's club in Liverpool. The club's founders, members of the Liverpool Literary and Philosophical Society, had the intention to establish an alternative meeting place to the often rowdy coffee houses. Therefore a Neo-classical building was designed by the architect Thomas Harrison and finally built between 1800 and 1802. Beyond that the Lyceum became host of the Liverpool Subscription Library. Founded in 1757, it is most probably the first lending library in Europe.
