 Die Karriere von Widener begann während des Bürgerkrieges als Fleischlieferant der Unionsarmee. Nach dem Ende des Krieges wurde er zum Stadtkämmerer von Philadelphia. Zudem ging er eine Partnerschaft mit William L. Elkins ein und baute mit diesem das Straßenbahnsystem in Philadelphia und später auch in Pittsburgh, Baltimore und Chicago auf. Die Erträge hieraus investierte Widener in US Steel und American Tobacco. Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts baute er eine Kunstsammlung auf, die als eine der attraktivsten Amerikas gilt.

 Peter A. Wideners career started as a meat supplier to the Federate Army during the Civil War. When the war was over, Widener became the city treasurer of Philadelphia. In addition, he became partners with William L. Elkins and together they developed the tramway system in Philadelphia and then also in Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Chicago. Widener invested the revenues in US Steel and American Tobacco. At the end of the 19th century he created an art collection that is considered one of the most attractive collections in the US.
