| Der American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions ist die älteste amerikanische Auslandsmissionsgesellschaft für das Christentum. Sie wurde 1810 von Hochschulabgängern des Williams College vorgeschlagen und 1812 offiziell eingetragen. Neben der Verbreitung der christlichen Lehre, zum Beispiel durch Übersetzungen der Bibel in die jeweiligen Landessprachen, sorgten die Missionare auch für Herstellung von Druckerpressen und Drucktypen. Aber auch medizinische und soziale Projekte wurden unternommen. Dazu wurde eine Reihe von Missionaren vor ihrer Entsendung ausgebildet. 1961 schloss sich der American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions mit anderen Vereinigungen zusammen, um den United Church Board for World Ministries zu bilden. Insgesamt gab es fünf Schiffe mit dem Namen Morning Star. Das im August 1884 vom Stapel gelassene Schiff war die vierte Morning Star: Ende 1883 wurde die Jugend der Vereinigten Staaten umworben, Aktien für die vierte Morning Star zu zeichnen. Der Aktienpreis wurde hierfür auf 0,25 US-$ pro Aktie reduziert. Die Nachfrage war dermaßen gigantisch, dass bereits im Februar 1884 der Auftrag zum Bau des Schiffes vergeben werden konnte. Im gleichen Monat wurde die dritte Morning Star verschrottet. Die vierte Morning Star wog 430 Tonnen und kostete 42.600 US-Dollar. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions was the first American Christian missionary organization for foreign countries. It was created in 1810 by recent graduates of Williams College, and registered in 1812. Printing and literacy played crucial roles in the process of Bible translation. Similarly, the press runs and literacy presentations contributed significantly to the social involvement exhibited by the Board. To a greater or lesser extent, education, medicine, and social concerns supplemented the preaching efforts by missionaries. In 1961, the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions merged with other societies to form the United Church Board for World Ministries, an agency of the United Church of Christ. There were five Morning Star ships. The one that launched in August 1884 was the fourth Morning Star: At late 1883, an appeal was made to the youth of the United States to take stock in a new Morning Star at twenty-five cents a share. The response was so great that by February 1884, a contract to build the ship was initiated, and they began to build the same month that the third Morning Star was wrecked.
