| 1891 begann Alexandre Darracq mit der Produktion von Fahrrädern der Marke Gladiator. Später folgten Automobile dieser Marke. Mit der obigen Gesellschaft wollte das Unternehmen den italienischen Markt erobern. Sie errichtete ein Montagewerk in Neapel. Die dort montierten Modelle waren aber wenig erfolgreich, und so wurde das Werk nach Mailand verlegt und 1910 an lombardische Investoren verkauft. Die Firma wurde in Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili umbenannt, kurz ALFA. 1915 setzte der Großaktionär Banca di Sconto den Ingenieur Nicola Romeo als neuen Werksleiter ein. Sein Name floss in den späteren Firmennamen ALFA-ROMEO ein. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Alexandre Darracq began the production of cycles in 1891. He sold his cycles and later his cars under the brand Gladiator. The Italian company was founded to conquer the Italian market. There was an assembly plant in Naples. But the cars built there sold not very well. Therefore the plant was moved to Milano and in 1910 finally sold to investors. The name of the company was changed to Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili (ALFA). In 1915 the major shareholder, the Banca di Sconto, installed Nicola Romeo as new boss of the plant.
