	Die Gesellschaft wurde 1856 unter Übernahme von zwölf Kohlefeldern in der Nähe von Harpen gegründet. 1934 erwarb der Flick-Konzern einen großen Anteil. Später wurde der französische Stahlkonzern Sidechar und danach VEW Großaktionär. 1970 kam es zur Umfirmierung in Harpen AG. Heute ist RWE Großaktionär der Gesellschaft. Diese ist im Energieversorgungsbereich tätig und verwaltet ihr eigenes Immobilienvermögen.
