| John Warne Gates (1855-1911) war Kapitalist, Promoter und Spieler. Letzteres brachte ihm den Spitznamen Bet-a-million Gates ein. Sein Vermögen machte Gates mit den Monopol auf Stacheldraht. Berühmt wurde Gates auch, als er eines Tages J. P. Morgan die Macht bei der Louisville and Nashville entreißen wollte. Gates verlor sein gesamtes Vermögen und war später Organizer von Texaco. | ||||
| The certificate is issued to John W. Gates and bears his original signature on the reverse side. John Warne Gates (1855-1911) was a capitalist, promoter and gambler. This last trait earned him the nickname Bet-a-Million Gates. Gates made his fortune with a monopoly on barbed wire. Gates was also known for his attempt to snatch power of the Louisville and Nashville from J.P. Morgan. Gates lost his entire fortune and later was an organizer of Texaco. | ||||
