| Thomas Burgess (1756 – 1837), englischer Autor und Philosoph, war sowohl Bischof von St. Davids (an der walisischen Nordküste) als auch Bischof von Salisbury (im Südwesten Englands). Als wahrer Protestant opponierte er kontinuierlich sowohl den Unitarismus als auch die katholische Emanzipation. Er verteidigte die Prinzipien der sukzessiven Emanzipation in seiner sich mit der Abschaffung der Sklaverei beschäftigenden Schrift „Considerations on the Abolition of Slavery“, welche er 1788 veröffentlichte. 1820 wurde er Präsident der kurz zuvor gegründeten Royal Society of Literature, die damals wie heute britische Literatur fördern sollte. In seinem Geburtsort Odiham war er Gründungsmitglied der dortigen Odiham Agricultural Society, ferner trug er zur Entstehung der Royal Veterinary Society bei. Dies waren zweifelsohne wichtige Meilensteine zur Weiterentwicklung des Veterinärwesens. Robert Nares war Archdiakon von Stafford und ein Repräsentant des Bischofs. Er war Geistlicher, Philologe und Autor zugleich. So veröffentlichte er u.a. “The Elements of Orthoepy” und “Nares' Glossary”. | ||||
| Thomas Burgess (1756 – 1837), an English author and philosopher, was both Bishop of Saint David's and Bishop of Salisbury. Being a real protestant he was continuously opposing both Unitarianism and Catholic emancipation. He advocated the principle of gradual emancipation in his “Considerations on the Abolition of Slavery”, which were published in 1788. In 1820 he became first president of the recently founded Royal Society of Literature, now and then responsible for promoting good British writing. Born in Odiham, Burgess also was a founding member of the Odiham Agricultural Society. Further he assisted to establish the Royal Veterinary Society. Both were another important milestones for the improvement of the veterinary care. Robert Nares was Archdeacon of Stafford and acted as the bishop's representative. He was a clergyman, philologist and author. Therefore he published “The Elements of Orthoepy” and “Nares' Glossary”. | ||||
