Ein Stethoskop ist ein Diagnosewerkzeug, das durch einfache physikalische Phänomene Körpergeräusche besser hörbar macht. Entwickelt wurde es 1816 von René Laënnec (1781 - 1826), einem französischen Arzt am Hôpital Necker in Paris. William James Penfold (1875 - 1941), ein britischer Bakteriologe, entwickelte eine Verbesserung des Stethoskops dahingehend, dass die beiden Hörer automatisch in den Ohren festgehalten und die Untersuchung dadurch erleichtert wurde.
The stethoscope, an acoustic medical device for auscultation of the internal sounds of an animal or human body, was invented in 1816 by René Laënnec (1781 - 1826), a French physician working at the Necker Hospital in Paris. William James Penfold (1875 - 1941), a British bacteriologist, invented an improvement in binaural stethoscopes whereby the operation is facilitated and the earpieces may be automatically held to the ears.
