The oldest Swedish railway share certificates known! The Swedish count Adolf Eugene von Rosen received the permission to build railways in Sweden in 1845. The first railway was built between the town of Köping and Hult, a small port at Lake Vänern. The intention was to connect the city with the steamboats on the la- kes Mälaren and Vänern, giving a motorised connection between Gothenburg and Stockholm. To finance this project, von Rosen con- vinced British investors. When the company ran out of money in the 1850s, the parliament of Sweden decided that the Swedish Trunk links (stambanorna) should be built and operated by the state. The first completed railway in Sweden was the Frykstadbanan, between Frykstad and Klara Älvs, in the province of Värmland, which opened in 1849. It used horses for pulling the trains. Steam locomotives were first introduced in 1856. The railway from Arboga to Köping, which was the first part of Köping to Hult, was completed in 1857. The railway to Hult has never been completed.
