Mr. Doctor William Camac, who was very active in the local politics of Philadelphia in the 1850th, visited many zoological gardens du- ring his visits in Europe. He founded the Zoological Society of Philadelphia in 1859. But it had been impossible to realise the plans for 13 years, because of the civil war. The plan of a zoological garden was reactivated in 1872. The city of Philadelphia made a 13 hectare lar- ge area available next to the Fairmount Parks, outside of the city. The zoo was opened on 1 July 1874. At the beginning, the zoo had 282 animals, predominantly Australian and North American species, but also lions, tigers, zebras, elephants and antelopes. Because it was the first zoological garden in the United States, more than 200,000 visitors came in the first year of its existence. Several new buildings and improvements were done after 1945. The zoo developed because of the breed of rare animals and plants to one of the largest and most attractive zoos in the world. Der amerikanische Bürgerkrieg machte jedoch die Ver- wirklichung der Zoopläne 13 Jahre lang unmöglich. Die Pläne für den Zoo wurden daher erst 1872 reaktiviert. Die Stadt stellte ein 13 Hektar großes Gelände im Bereich des Fairmont Parks, außerhalb der Stadt, zur Verfügung. Bereits am 1. Juli 1874 konnte der Zoo er- öffnet werden. Er brachte es anfangs auf 282 Tiere, darunter befanden sich australische und nordamerikanische Arten, aber auch Lö- wen, Tiger, Zebras, Elefanten und Antilopen. Da dies der erste Zoo in den USA war, kamen bereits im ersten Jahr mehr als 200.000 Be- sucher. Nach 1945 wurden zahlreiche Neubauten und Instandsetzungen durchgeführt, so dass sich der Zoo in der Folgezeit durch die Zucht von seltenen Tieren und Pflanzen zu einem der größten und attraktivsten der Welt entwickelte.
