In 1858, Allgemeine Versicherungs-Gesellschaft Helvetia , the first Swiss insurance company to offer insurance against the risks of land, river and sea transport, was foun- ded in St. Gallen. Three years later, in 1861, the Schweizerische Feuerversicherungsge- sellschaft Helvetia was founded as a private fire insurance company, also in St. Gallen. The trigger for the foundation was the fire in Glarus, in which two thirds of the city fell victim to the fire on the night of 10/11 May 1861 and half of the inhabitants became homeless. Helvetia quickly expanded to all five continents. As early as 1862, Helvetia Feu- er opened its first branches in Germany and from 1876 it expanded into the USA. Bran- ches were opened in California and New York. In 1968, the Allgemeine Versicherungs- Gesellschaft Helvetia merged with Helvetia Unfall and Helvetia Leben. Six years later, Helvetia Feuer and Helvetia Allgemeine merged to form Helvetia Feuer. However, the company’s shareholders decided in 1988 to split up. A complete separation of Helvetia Feuer and Helvetia Unfall was decided at an extraordinary general meeting. The complete separation also became clear in a change of name: Hel- vetia Unfall was called Elvia in the future. The subsidiary responsible for the travel insurance business already bore this name. Today the company belongs to Allianz. Helvetia Fire was renamed Helvetia Insurance. In 1996, Helvetia merged with the long-established Basel life insurer Patria, whose beginnings go back to the Basler Sterbe- und Alters-Kasse founded in 1878. The name of the new joint compa- ny is Helvetia Patria Holding.
