Both items origin from a very old collection, and both are the only known! R12! The German airplane pioneer Hans Grade (1879 - 1946) attented the college of technology in Berlin-Charlottenburg between 1900 and 1904. During his education, he already constructed in Köslin his first motorcycle and took over a repair and assembling shop for motor- cycles. This company was led by him until 1905, when he founded the Grade-Motoren-Werke-GmbH in Magdeburg. This company was taken over by the Neue Motoren-Fabrik AG (incorporated on 12 February 1920) in summer 1920. The company was renamed to Grade- Motorenwerke AG. Grade started the construction of a triplane after Grade joint the Magdeburg army engeneer battalion in 1907. His first flight took place at the Cracauer Anger in Magdeburg in 1907. At a hight of eight meters he managed the first motor flight in Ger- many. The flight ended in a crash. Grade moved his company plant to Brok (now Borkheide) in 1909. At Bork he undertook his first flight with his monoplane Libelle in Bork in later summer of 1909. He won the “Lanz-Preis der Lüfte in Johannisthal” on 30 September. Grade founded a plane factory and the first German flight school in Bork in 1910. Both operated until 1914. The emperor Wilhelm II granted the honor “Kronenorden der 4. Klasse” to Grade in 1912. He engaged especially in repairing warplanes from 1914 on. He also constructed a tractor and a compact car. Grade started automobile production in 1919. The Grade-Automobil-Werke AG was founded on 17 February 1921. It changed its name to Grade-Motorewerke AG in 1925. The company produced 1,000 cars until 1924. The Grade-Mo- torwerke AG merged with the company R. Wolf AG, Magdeburg. The company merged with the Maschinenfabrik Buckau AG to form Maschinenfabrik Buckau R. Wolf AG in 1928.
