16 Los 621 Derby Canal Company - Little Eaton Railway Derby, 7 October 1793, 1 Share, #552, 20.2 x 15.2 cm, black, beige, condition EF/VF, paper seal, printed on vellum. The world’s earliest known railway share certificate! R8. The company was founded with a share capital of £ 60,000 in 1793. The text on the share certificate clearly indicates the purpose of the company: „…for making and maintaining a Navigable Canal from the River Trent … to Little Eaton … and for making Railways from such Canal to several Collieries … in the County of Derby”. The 4.5 miles long Little Eaton Railway, which was built by the pioneer rail- way engineer Benjamin Outram, was finished two years later (1795). The railway was in operation till 1908. The first part of the canal was also opened in 1795. The canal was in operation till the end of World War II. The liquidation of the company was finished on 24 June 1974. Bereits aus dem Text auf der Aktienurkunde selbst geht klar hervor, dass die eingeworbenen Mittel sowohl für den Bau eines Kanals wie auch einer Eisenbahn bestimmt sind. Es heißt dort: „…for making and maintaining a Navigable Canal from the River Trent … to Little Eaton … and for making Railways from such Ca- nal to several Collieries … in the County of Derby”. Bereits zwei Jahre später, 1795, wurde die 4,5 Mei- len lange, von Benjamin Outram geplante Little Eaton Railway eröffnet. Die pferdebetriebene Bahn war bis 1908 in Betrieb. 1795 wurde auch der erste Kanalabschnitt eröffnet. Der Kanal blieb noch bis zum Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs in Betrieb.
