The Bank of Alexandria was the first bank of all states southern of the Potomac. The name giving city Alexandria was located in Virgi- nia, only a few miles southern of the future capital Washington. The bank was founded with headquarters in the District of Columbia on 23 November 1792. It had a share capital of 750 Shares at US-$ 200 each (= US-$ 150,000). The capital was increased to US-$ 500,000 in 1795. The bank financed especially the turnaround of goods in the port of Alexandria at the Potomac River, gave credit to local mer- chants, and financed real estate deals. The Bank of Alexandria became the house bank of George Washington shortly after its foundati- on. Washington financed his plantations and other business activities through the bank. This was the reason, why George Washington also invested personally in the share capital of the bank. The Bank of Alexandria failed during the banking crises of the year 1836/37.
