A highlight of Munich’s cultural and theatre history. The Deutsches Theater München („German Theatre“), located in Schwanthalerstraße 13, was constructed by Alexander Blum, Josef Rank, and Karl Stöhr in neo-baroque. It was opened on 26 September 1896. It was first named Fairy Palace. The complex contained, besides an auditorium with 1679 seats and the smaller auditorium „Silver Hall“, restaurants, a café, shops and 30 apartments. In the carnival season, the theatre plays an important role as big balls and parties are catered there. In the theatre especially musicals are staged, but the pro- gram includes operettas, ballets and concerts with international enter- tainers of the performing arts entertainment. The Deutsche Theater is Germany’s largest theatre for guest performances. Under the direction of Hans Gruß who led the theatre from 1918, and in addition to the ap- pearance of Tiller Girls, Karl Valentin and others, also Josephine Baker gave a performance in the theatre but was however banned in 1929. The Deutsches Theater AG was founded by Hans Gruß, the city of Munich, and many companies in December 1931. Under the Nazi re- gime Gruß was replaced by Paul Wolz in 1935. On 9 March 1943, the theatre was destroyed by bombs. In 1951, the Deutsches Theater was re-opened, as it had been partially rebuilt in 1949 to 1951. Kurt Plappe- rer became tenant and director of the Deutsches Theater in 1965. He financed it by his private means until his departure. The Theatre was bought by the Munich city government in 1982. It was modernised between 2008 and 2014, and reopened ceremoniously on 17 January 2014. Minimum bid: 1,000 € Der Eingang zumDeutschen Theater in München. The front of the Deutsches Theater in Munich.
