| Die Gesellschaft entstand 1865 durch den Zusammenschluss der China & Japan Steam Navigation Company mit der Labuan Coal Company. Es wurde die Schifffahrt in China betrieben sowie Kohlegruben in Labuan ausgebeutet. Labuan ist eine Insel vor der Küste von Malaysia und gehört heute zu Malaysia. Die Kohle wurde benötigt, um die Britishe Marine in Asien damit zu versorgen. Beide Gesellschaften waren vor dem Zusammenschluss unterfinanziert. Die neue Gesellschaft platzierte allerdings Aktien und Anleihen und brachte so neue Finanzmittel bei. | In 1865, the company was incorporated by the merger of China & Japan Steam Navigation Company and the Labuan Coal Company. The company supplied steam navigation in China and worked the coal mines in Labuan. Labuan is an island next to Malaysia and, today, part of Malaysia. The coal was needed to provide the British Navy in the East with coal. Both companies were undercapitalized before the merger. The new company acquired fresh money in the beginning by selling shares and bonds.
