The Mephisto of Wall Street and son of a poor farmer quickly earned the reputation of a cunning businessman in New York. Together with James Fisk and Daniel Drew, he often battled for the domination in several firms, particularly railway lines. The battle for the Erie Railroad will definitely go in the history books. Gould mostly needed larger contributions for his financial operations. Since he was often short of cash, he arranged for the financing through Russell Sage most of the time.
