Die Gesellschaft wurde 1894 von Lieven Gevaert in Antwerpen gegründet. Sie produzierte zunächst nur Fotopapiere. Im Jahr 1964 fusionierte die Firma mit Agfa zur Agfa-Gevaert-Gruppe. Dies war eine der ersten großen Fusionen zwischen zwei Aktiengesellschaften aus unterschiedlichen europäischen Ländern. 1981 übernahm Bayer die AG und brachte 1999 wieder einen Teil an die Börse.
The company was founded in Antwerp by Lieven Gevaert in 1894. It produced only photo paper in the beginning. The company merged with Agfa to form the Agfa-Gevaert Group in 1964. This was the first large merger of the joint-stock-companies from two different European countries. Bayer AG took over the company in 1981, and it relisted it at the stock market again in 1999.
