Except of Panama, Central America was as Captaincy General of Guatemala part of New Spain from the 16th century onwards. It became part of Mexico for a short periode of time after the independence war in 1821. When Emperor Agustin I was removed in 1823, the region separated as Federal Republic of Central America. The federation consisted of Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Cost Rica. The loose alliance slid into power struggle and civil war in the following years, and the federation finally broke away between 1838 and 1841. |
