1855 legte der US-Präsident Franklin Pierce den Grundstein für den Bau des vom Architekten Napoleon LeBrun entworfenen Opernhauses. Seither wird die American Academy of Music ununterbrochen als Opernhaus genutzt. Sie ist somit das älteste für diese Zwecke genutzte Gebäude in den USA. Die Oper bietet Platz für rund 3.000 Besucher. Sie trägt den Spitznamen Grand Old Lady of Broad Street.
Napoleon LeBrun designed the building of the American Academy of Music. Franklin Pierce, President of the United States, laid the foundation block in 1855. It was built in 1855-57 and is the oldest opera house in the United States that is still used for its original purpose. The music hall has round about 3,000 seats. It is known as the Grand Old Lady of Broad Street.
