The official name of the Mersey Steamship Co. Ltd first appeared in 1871. The company - mainly controlled by the Forwood family - owned and operated 20 ships, all of them small passenger carrying cargo ships. Several of these ships were already lost in the 1890's and it is said that the stranding of another one (the “Telde”) in 1906 was a major contributory factor to the financial downfall of the company. Finally in 1907 it was declared bankrupt and sold to the Royal Mail Steamship Company.
