Das Schauspielhaus befindet sich im Amsterdamer Viertel Plantage. Einst beherbergte das Gebäude ein Wohnhaus für den benachbarten Zoo Artis. 1892 wurde es dann in die Artis Schouburg umgewandelt. Es entwickelte sich zu einem der berühmtesten Theater Amsterdams. Während der Besetzung durch die Nazis wurde es als Zwischenstation für niederländische Juden, die über das Durchgangslager Westerbork ins Konzentrationslager deportiert wurden. Heute befindet sich in dem Gebäude eine Gedenkstätte für die Opfer des Holocaust.
The theatre is located in the Amsterdam neighborhood Plantage. It housed the building a residence for the nearby zoo Artis. It was changed into the Artis Schouburg in 1892 and became one of the most famous theatres of Amsterdam. It was used as stopover for Dutch Jews, which were deported via the transit camp Westerbork to the concentration camp, during the occupation by the Nazis. Today, the building houses a memorial place for the victims of the holocaust.
