Egbert P. Judson (1812-1893) was an inventor and manufacturer of explosives. Around 1886 he founded the Butterworth-Judson Chemical Works in Newark. The plant produced heavy chemicals such as sulfuric acid, which was a key raw material for the production of organic chemicals, intermediates and explosives as these were in high demand due to World War I. Therefore an unit for synthetic phenol and picric acid was built in 1917. After several accidents (explosions and fire) the companies’ success decrased and it finally went bankrupt in 1922.
