Die Gesellschaft wurde 1869 in Lima (Ohio) als Lima Machine Works als Fabrik für landwirtschaftliche Maschinen und Sägewerke gegründet. Ab 1891 lautete die Firma Lima Locomotive & Machine Company und ab 1912 Lima Locomotive Corporation. Nachdem Joel Coffin 1916 die Firma übernahm, benannte er sie in Lima Locomotive Works um. Hinter Baldwin und ALCO war die Gesellschaft der weltweit drittgrößte Hersteller von Lokomotiven. Nach mehreren Fusionen stellte die Gesellschaft 1968 den Lokomotivbau ein und baute fortan Kräne.
The company was founded in Lima (Ohio) as Lima Machine Works in 1869. It produced agricultural machines and operated a sawmill. The name was changed to Lima Locomotive & Machine Company in 1891 and to Lima Locomotive Corporation in 1912. The company was taken over by Joel Coffin in 1916 and the name was changed to Lima Locomotive Works. It was the third largest manufacturer of railways behind Baldwin and ALCO. After several mergers the company stopped manufacturing locomotives and started manufacturing cranes in 1968.
