Incorporated 1810 with a capital of £22,000 in £50 shares, and opened in 1812. First railway company authorised by Parliament to carry passengers but its main function was to serve the coal mines and iron foundries in South Wales and the Wye Valley, growing fast under the demands of the industrial revolution. Funded mainly by local capitalists – this share was subscribed by Hezekiah Swift of the town of Monmouth. Operated its line for about 70 years, then absorbed by the Great Western Railway.
