Mit der Accessory Transit Co. of Nicaragua legte der Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt den Grundstein für sein Imperium. Im Frühjahr 1853 wurde die 500.000 Dollar teure North Star fertig gestellt. Das Schiff galt als die luxuriöseste Yacht ihrer Zeit. Die Geschäfte liefen gut, und so machte sich Vanderbilt mit seiner gesamten Verwandtschaft im Mai 1853 zu einer großen Europareise auf. Um sein Interesse bei der Accessory Transit während seiner Reise abzusichern, setzte er Charles Morgan (er hat die Aktie im Original signiert) und Commodore Cornelius Garrison als seine Bevollmächtigten ein. Morgan und Garrison nutzten ihre Position allerdings aus und hintergingen Vanderbilt. Es kam zum Transit War. Als der Commodore im Herbst 1853 aus Europa zurückkam, schrieb er an die beiden Saboteure einen legendären Brief, in dem er ihnen mit dem Ruin drohte. In der Folgezeit kaufte der Commodore Aktien und Anleihen der Accessory Transit auf. Nach drei Jahren, 1856, hatte Vanderbilt die Vorherrschaft zurückgewonnen. Jetzt ging er zum Gegenangriff über: Er verhandelte in den folgenden zwei Jahren die Transitrechte mit Nicaragua neu und sicherte sich dabei Rechte für die kommenden 50 Jahre. Damit war die Geschäftsbasis von Morgan und Garrison (beide hatten nach ihrem Rausschmiss eine Konkurrenzfirma eröffnet) entzogen. Fortan mussten sie 672.000 Dollar pro Jahr für die Transitrechte zahlen. Vanderbilt hingegen verkaufte seine Schiffe, kassierte die Gebühren und finanzierte damit den Aufbau seines legendären Eisenbahnnetzes. | |||

Loan on the ships Northern Light and Star of the West with the original signatures of Charles Morgan and George A. Hoyt. Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt laid the foundation of his empire with the Accessory Transit Co. of Nicaragua. In spring 1853 the $500,000 North Star was completed. The ship was reputed to be the most luxurious yacht of its time. His affairs were going well; so Vanderbilt prepared for a grand tour of Europe in May 1853 with all his relatives. To protect his interests in Accessory Transit during his trip, he appointed Charles Morgan (he signed the original shares) and Commodore Cornelius Garrison as his authorized representatives. Morgan and Garrison abused their position and deceived Vanderbilt. The Transit War followed. When the Commodore returned from Europe in the fall of 1853, he wrote the two saboteurs a legendary letter, in which he threatened them with ruin. In the period following the Commodore bought up the shares and loans of Accessory Transit. By the end of three years, in 1856, Vanderbilt had regained control. Now he went over to the counterattack: In the next two years he renegotiated transit rights with Nicaragua and assured himself the rights for the next 50 years. Therein he destroyed the basis of the business of Morgan and Garrison (both had opened a competing firm after their dismissal). From then on they had to pay $672,000 annually for transit rights. Vanderbilt on the other hand sold his ships and collected his money; with it he financed the construction of his legendary railroad network. | |||
