Oregon and California Rail Road Company

Geschichte
Geschichte (Englisch)
The check bears the original signature of Ben Holladay. Ben Holladay (1819-1887) earned his first money in trade with native Indians. During the Mexican-American War he furnished the army with supplies. After the end of the war he concentrated on trade with the Mormon settlements in Utah. After the bankruptcy of the firm Russell, Majors & Waddell, Holladay took over their freight lines and built a transportation empire that reached from California all the way to Missouri. Ben Holladay recognized the signs of the times: When the railroad lines became too difficult a competitor for him, he sold his company to Wells, Fargo & Co. With the proceeds of the sale Holladay had the Oregon and California Railroad built. This line was never completed because the Panic of 1873 ruined Holladay.
