 Franklin Winfield Woolworth wurde am 13. April 1852 geboren. Er arbeitete als Verkäufer und Lagerarbeiter und später für Moore & Smith. Seinerzeit wurde Ware erst auf Wunsch des Kunden vorgelegt und es gab auch kaum festgelegte Preise. Woolworth revolutionierte das: Er präsentierte viele Artikel zu einem festen Preis von fünf Cent auf einem offenen Ladentisch. 1878 wurde der erste Woolworth-Laden in Lancaster (Pennsylvania) eröffnet. 1905 wurde die Firma in eine Aktiengesellschaft umgewandelt.

 Franklin Winfield Woolworth was born on 13 April 1852. He worked as a stock boy in a general store and later for Moore & Smith. Goods were stored in the back and only shown on the wish of the customer at that time. Price were not fix but negotiable. Woolworth revolutionised this system. He presented many articles with a fix price of five Cents at an open counter. The first Woolworth store was opened in Lancaster (Pennsylvania) in 1878. The company was changed in to a joint-stock-company in 1905.
